Namco to Save Hellgate?

Namco Bandai's Zack Karisson posted this at the official forums, which seems to indicate that Namco could be stepping in...
Hello Hellgaters,

I know everyone is looking for an announcement, and we'd love to make one -- but right now, many things are in flux and we don't have all the information yet. As soon as we do, we'll post here on the forums, on the website, and anywhere else we can find you.

In the short term, please do not worry. The game is up, the servers are not going away in the short term and any major changes to status will be communicated in advance.

I'd like to ask for your patience as we try to figure it all out and chart a new course. We value your community, your commitment, and your passion for Hellgate and we will make sure that any solution that we architect will support all of you as best as we are able.

Thanks again. We hope to have a real announcement shortly.

It's Beginning To Get Ugly

HellgateGuru has posted another translation of a Korean Article at ThisIsGame.com, where apparently HanbitSoft has some not so kind words to say about Flagship Studios. Lowlights include calling them selfish and irresponsible. In less nasty news Hanbit believes they have a good shot at acquiring the Intellectual Property of both Hellgate: London and Mythos. We'll see how this plays out...

Flagship Not Quite Dead

Flagship Studios released a press release today to let the world know that they are not quite dead yet, but that they have laid off most of their employees. Here's the PR:
San Francisco, CA (July 15, 2008) — Flagship Studios has announced today that despite rumors to the contrary, the company is still operating.

“It is with deep regret that I must announce that Flagship Studios has laid off most employees. However, the core management and founding team members are still at Flagship.” said Bill Roper, CEO of Flagship Studios. “The past five years have been an incredible experience for us, but unfortunately, we couldn’t sustain the size of the company any longer.”

Flagship Studios owns the rights to all its technology and IP, including Hellgate: London and Mythos. Due to the current situation, Flagship will not be taking any new subscribers for Hellgate: London, and all current subscriptions will not be billed.

Flagship wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to those that have supported the company and games over the past five years.

Hanbit Comments on Flagship

There is still a lot of information to sift through here to get to the bottom of things with the Flagship Studios shut down. HanbitSoft's chief executive Kim Ki-young has commented on the situation at TheGames.co.kr. His comments were translated and posted at HellgateGuru. Hanbit claims that this incident has nothing to do with Hanbit, but does go on to say this bit...
‘if we can take intellectual property rights of relevant products from Flagship Studios, we have confidence to develop the games ourselves based on T3 Entertainment’s advanced technology’ and ‘we believe we can service fresh and interesting games to online gamers by getting intellectual property rights and development. This crisis could be an opportunity for us’

Flagship Studios Closing

It does appear that the rumors of yesterday were at least partially true. Flagship Studios has closed, all staff has been fired, and all I.P. for Hellgate: London has been lost. There is a full article detailing the incident at VE3D.

Big Changes For Hellgate?

There is something going on with Flagship and Hellgate, but we aren't sure what. Here is what we know. Korean web site TheGames.co.kr has reported that HanbitSoft is taking over full control of the game. The web site is in Korean, but there is a translation at Hellgate Guru. A person purporting to be a Hanbit Lawyer has contacted HellgateGuru and informed them that the information was not correct and requested it be removed. This doesn't seem to be the end of it though. Flagship has denied the reports, but Gamasutra confirms massive layoffs at Flagship Studios, and undisclosed internal turbulence. Players are reporting that the ability to subscribe and cancel subscriptions has been removed at the moment. Something is definitely going on here, but the quesiton is what?

Max Schaefer Interview

Flagship's Max Schaefer took the time out of his busy day to give an interview with Euro Gamer. Here's a piece of his mind...
I think as far as things you can look at and can point at the Overworld is going to be about as significant a change as there is. However we do want to flesh out several areas that we feel the game is fairly thin with right now, particularly social features, guild support, group play and social things like that.

Updated Items (3): Carnal Prism, Hu's Shoes, Vaisha's Caress
